Christmas is coming - I have not seen the goose recently, so I do not know whether it is fat yet or not. However, these rolags / punis incorporate the colours of the holly, ivy, mistletoe and pine cones that are often put together to make wreaths to decorate front doors at Christmas time.

The base of the rolags are made from 21 micron merino in shades of green, with ultrafine merino and cashmere for the white mistletoe berries, scarlet tussah silk for the holly berries, baby llama for the pine cones and finally silver Angelina for the frost.

I was asked to put together a gradient for Christmas. I decided to use the inspiration of the Christmas decorations moving from white/silver to gold.

I decided to use eri silk to give the shimmering shades of gold in most of the batts. The white batt is made using tussah silk.

The batt set in the photograph shows a 150g gradient made from 2/3 superfine BFL as a base, blended with 1/3 silk.

This colourway is called Ominous because that is the feeling that I get when looking at the photograph of the woodland road. This gradient is made from Corridale fibres moving from mid grey to dark confier green to black.

You will receive 7 mini batts that in total make up just over 100g of fibre.

The Corridale fibres will felt. If you do not wish them to, hand wash in cool water.

This gradient is the first instalment of the Fellview Fibres Gradient Club 2019. 

I chose a photograph of a fox, looking most interested in…something! I wanted this gradient to not only mimic the colours of this animal, but to give the depth of shades and variability in shades seen in the warm fox fur.

We have had the first snows of winter here in the last few days. This has turned the landscape a beautiful set of almost monochromatic tones.

These delicately coloured rolags / punis represent the gentle colour variations that I have seen (when I can see it!) of the snow on Skiddaw.

Dreaming of crisp winter days, walking along the forest tracks at Whinlatter with my dogs, with snow (or more likely frost) on the fir trees.

These luscious rolags / punis are made of chestnut brown baby alpaca, superfine white merino and cashmere, 21 micron merino in shades of grey and green - with a little silver Angelina for added sparkle.

You will receive just over 100g of luxury rolags in this colourway. A lovely easy way to spin fibres, but in this format the fibres could also be used for felting.

When I saw this beautiful photograph, I just had to do something with the colours!

I have blended together soft 21 micron merino in rosey tones to reflect the colours of the beautiful sky, and then mixed in with those fibres wonderfully soft white baby llama and light grey baby alpaca. Both the llama and alpaca fibres, when spun will give the yarn a fantastic, soft, misty halo - and will also give the yarn extra warmth and drape.

This blend is, to me, next to the skin soft, I would happily wear this blend in a shawl or scarf.

For centuries Celtic cultures have carved lamps to ward off evil spirits on All Hallow's Eve. Now pumpkins are used, but in the recent past turnip lanterns were carved out. I did this as a child - and carving out a turnip is hard work! Strained wrists and numb palms were our reward as we ground out the insides using a spoon.

These batts are exactly the same blend as the Ravenwing rolags. They are made from blending 1/3 tussah silk with 2/3 soft merino fibres. Each of the shades is blended three times to ensure an even mixing of the silk and merino, without the production of nepps. These batts will easily spin into laceweight yarn.

I am offering the colourway in batts for those (including myself) who want to spin a single continuus gradient, rather than self striping yarn.

A friend wants to make a Magpie inspired shawl, could I put together a colourway for it. I thought hard about how to make up this colourway. I decided on four different coloured rolags (instead of muticoloured rolags) to give more options for spinning a magpie yarn.

Options using this rolag set include

1. Spinning each colour up separately, and each separate yarn can be used for stranded work to make the Magpie Shawl

2. Each colour could be a different ply in a 4 ply yarn

Based on posies of flowers that I used to pick whist walking to an ancient remote church. I would pick wild flowers whilst walking through the woods and fields to reach the church. The rolags are made from a range of shades of 21 micron merino, Falkand fibre, tussah silks and bamboo. Most of the fibres in this colourful blend will felt. If you do not wish them to, hand wash in cool water.

Another colourway inspired by the colours and places of France. I adore these soft, warm gentle colours of the narrow street. Just the place I would like to walk on a summer afternoon, to poke around in the flea market and wander into the neighbouring workshop.

This colourway is made up soft 21 micron merino in shades of terracotta, honey and peach, highlighted by streaks of silken soysilk.

The merino in this blend will felt. If you do not wish it to felt, hand wash in cool water.

I was asked to put together a colourway based on the kingfisher. After looking at lots of photographs of these beautiful birds, I decided that they were chameleon like, their blue plumage changing shade in different light. So, I decided to pick one beautiful inspiration photograph, and stick with that.

The colourway moves from deep greenyblue, through jades to white, and then the yellows and oranges of the brest plumage. In the photographed set, a small amount of trilobal has been added to the blend, to give a shimmer. The colourway can be made without the addition of trilobal.

This gradient is a lucious blend of 75% merino and 25% tussah silk. The blend is so soft with a gorgeous shimmer from the high level of silk in the blend. I have also added a little silver Angelina to represent the droplets of spray from the waves. The blend can be made with or without the Angelina.

It is coming up to the Tour de Fleece again. So I have been looking for inspiration for a new colourway. I chose this wonderful photograph of lavender. I really liked the soft colours and the variation in colour throughout the flower.

These rolags were designed for the 2019 Rolag Club. The theme for the year is 'The 4 Elements'. This colourway is inspired by 'Earth'

I chose the Neolithic stone circle at Castlerigg near Keswick as the basis for these Earth inspired rolags. I chose it because to me, this embodies all of my ideas about what the element Earth can imply. The stone circle was constructed in the Neolithic Age, which means ‘new stone age’, approximately 3000BC – a time before metal tools.

The Grey Wagtail is a charming bird, most often found by clear fast running streams in the hills. As all wagtails, they flit around, seemingly moving their tails up and down constantly. The Grey Wagtail is on the Red List for UK birds. This means that their numbers have decreased by at least 50% in the last 20 years. Happily, due to improving water quality, the range that these birds can survive in is increasing.

This gradient is the latest to be released from the Gradient Club. The colourway is based on a night-time photograph of Goðafoss in Iceland.

I made this gradient from naturally coloured Masham(40%)  and Baby Alpaca (40%) blended with coloured silks (20%). All of these fibres have relatively long staple lengths Masham at 15-38cm and Baby Alpaca at approx. 8cm. The fibres may be relatively bulky, but they all feel silken, and will have a fantastic drape.

I adore Herdwicks, they have beautiful smiling faces and are hardy animals that can live unaided on the fells. Their colours change through life, the lambs normally starting out pitch black, with white tips to their ears, this black fleece then changes to a chestnut brown in their first year. Finally, this changes to grey as the ewes age. These lovely ladies are a year old, otherwise know as 'Gimmers'. I love the way these ewes have positioned themselves on the rocks to survey their area of fellside.

I loved the way this photograph is basically monochrome with the flashes of red from markings (probably from the tups).

I saw the beautiful photograph of the end of the day overlooking the water. I had to make something using it as an inspiration. This gradient is made from soft 21 micron merino carefully blended to get a subtle gradient of muted, dusky shades of blue and blue/green.

The gradient set is made from seven mini batts, which together make up just over 100g of fibre.

I was tempted into joining a SillySalmonDesigns spin along. Well, I just had to use my new spindle, and I wanted to spin something blue. This is the colourway that I came up with for this project.

It is made from shades of blue and jade 21 micron merino fibres, with a little blue tussah silk and gold Angelina for that bit of shimmer and sparkle.

You will receive 100g of rolags - between 7-9 rolags in the Starry Sky colourway. The merino fibres in this blend will felt. I you do not wish them to, hand wash in cool water.

Whilst researching for a custom order, I found a wonderful photograph of a coral polyp in close up. I adored the soft, gentle colours and so carefully blended up shades of 21 micron merino to match the minature builder. It was only when I photographed the rolags that I noticed the similarity to the Antelope Canyon Rolags. However, this blend is far softer and dusky in shade than the bright vivacious Antelope Canyon colourway.
