Large Gradients

This colourway was designed for a 'Mother of Dragons' mini box which was inspired by some AI images I put together of Dragon Eggs.

 This colourway i called Draco Vulcanis. I put together this 'species' name from Draco (from the Greek name "drakon" meaning dragon) and Vulcan being the Roman God of fire, blacksmithing and volcanoes. This is because the colours in the egg reminded me of the colour of maga within a volcano. The shade move from bright yellow, through oranges to red and then on to deep violet shades.

This rolag gradient set was designed for the 2024 Halloween Box, which was themed on ' Monsters and Magic'. This delicate, dusky gradient is based on an inspiration image of an intent, intimidating dragon head.

This is a 10 shade merino gradient, based on a blue/green/purple dragon, each rolag is 10g of 21 micron merino

You can now purchase this gradient as either a 100g rolag gradient set OR a 150g gradient batt set.

This is the final colourway designed for the 2024 Halloween Box entitled 'Monsters and Magic'. I decided to put together an altogether different colourway, emphasizing elegance and serenity rather than the normal ghouls and horror for Halloween.

I loved the soft, gentle feeling of this Lady of the Lake image. So, I tried to put together an elegant, soft gradient to match.

The gradient is made of 21 micron merino, carefully blended with Pearl fibre and Angelina.

This is a 135g gradient made of 9 shades.

This extra large gradient was first made for the 'Beauty of the Beastly' themed box. The colourway is based on the colours found in the tentacles of a Portugese Man 'O War. The gradient is made of 18 different shades blended using soft, 21 micron merino.

The merino will felt, so handwash in cool water if you do not wish it to felt.

The inspiration photograph used is of Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland. There has been a fort or castle in this seaside location since Celtic times, but the core of todays castle was built in Norman times.

Since the colours of the sunrise are so stunning, and the central focus is the castle, I decided to to call this colourway Majestic, as this is true in both senses of the word.

There are 16 shades in this gradrient, moving from the deepest purple, through violets, lilacs, pinks, peaches and eventually yellows.

I was given these inspiration photographs as part of a chat in the Fellview Fibres group on Ravelry. I LOVE the colours of these blueberries on the vine, and so decided to convert them into fluff. The gradient is 1/3 bamboo and 2/3 21 micron merino. I decided to blend bamboo into the mix for two reasons, first the photographs seem to show a pale/white coating to the surface of the unripe berries, and secondly because I enjoyed spinning the Bamboo Forest blend so much - I wanted another bamboo blend to spin.

This gradient was designed as the second instalment of the Impressionists Gradient Club. The inspiration was a Monet painting of Venice at Twilight painted in 1908.

There are 16 colours in this gradient moving from rusty orange, through bright orange, yellow, green to blue.

All of the fibres used are superfine (18.5 micron) merino - so any yarn produced will be super soft.

The merino will felt, if you do not wish it to, hand wash in cool water.

I was asked to put together a gradient moving from grey to black to red. This is what I came up with.

A gradient made from 33% tussah silk 66% superfine merino.

Wonderfully soft, but with a great drape and shimmer from the silk.

The transitions move from mid grey, to black to ruby to scarlett.

The merino in this blend will felt.

This slightly larger than normal gradient batts set is based on a nebula found in the constellation of Orion. The Orion nebula is one of the brightest in the night sky and is approximately 1300 light years away from us. The nebula is an area of gas and dust where starts are being formed - they are sometime called stellar nurseries for that reason.

This set of 9 mini batts is made from 21 micron merino moving from vibrant greens through lime to gold and then moving through into cinnamon and reddy browns.

This colourway was initially made for the 2019-2020 Gradient Club members. The challenge was to produce a gradient using the inspiration of 'Vegetable'. I used an inspiration photograph of an ornamental cabbage where the colours gently transition from burgundy through dusky pink to creams and soft green.

Ths 150g set of 10 mini batts is made from 21 micron, soft merino. Each batt has been carefully blended three times to ensure even colour mixing.

The merino fibres wil felt. If you do not wish them to, hand wash in cool water.

I was asked to put together a colourway based on the kingfisher. After looking at lots of photographs of these beautiful birds, I decided that they were chameleon like, their blue plumage changing shade in different light. So, I decided to pick one beautiful inspiration photograph, and stick with that.

The colourway moves from deep greenyblue, through jades to white, and then the yellows and oranges of the brest plumage. In the photographed set, a small amount of trilobal has been added to the blend, to give a shimmer. The colourway can be made without the addition of trilobal.

I was asked to put together a custom colourway for a friend. She gave me an outline of her ideas and the name of the colourway. I then played (sorry experimented) with these colours to make a gradient colourway. This is the result.

Each batt is 15g moving from gold through golden browns to red/brown, to purple then silver to deep conifer green to bright spring green. In total the colourway adds up to a minimum of 195g of lovely, soft 21 micron merino.

This colourway can be made with coordinating Angelina or without.

I was asked to make a 12 batt set based on the Chakra colours. This is the set that I came up with. The colours start with violet blue moving through bright pinks, red, orange, yellow, green and finalyy back to blue again.

Each batt is 20g of blended 21 micron merino. Together the batts make up a total of 240g of lovely soft, fluffy merino.

I saw the most incredible photograph of a jellyfish by alexander-semenov. The colour transitions in the animal moving from turquoise at the top, through yellows, red tones, to purples back to deep blues just had to be made into a spinning gradient.

It has taken some time and experimentation to get the colours and transitions to look the way I want them, but this gradient batt set shows my final blend composition.

Shetland fibre is one that is commonly used and loved by handspinners. I have taken Shetland fibres in natural shades and blended them together to form a smooth gradient moving from white to grey to moorit to black.

Summer colours for the summer holidays! These colours remind me of the colours that can be seen on a tropical island, turquoise seas, golden sands, coral reefs and bright fish.

This gradient batt set is made up of 10 soft hand blended batts, made from 21 micron merino fibres.

You will receive just over 150g of fibre in total. The merino fibres will felt. If you do not want them to, hand wash in cool water.

All copper, including the copper in 'copper coins' will corrode and change colour over time. Today, that corrosion normally stops at the deep brown stage, probably due to the decrease in copper in the alloy used to make the coins. However, if coins are left out in the elements for long periods (like when embedded in the Wishing Trees) the coins will continue to corrode and produce Verdigris.

I love the colours of the Moonlight Shadow rolags/ punis so much, that I decided to have a go at turning them into a gradient set. I am so happy with how they have turned out!

This set of carefully blended 21 micron merino and silver Angelina batts in total weigh just over 150g.

There are 10 batts in total moving from cream to deepest purple through shades of dusky blue.

The fibre in these batts are straightforward to spin, and will felt if required.

One Monday morning as I was getting up for work, I noticed a glow coming from my craft room. When I went inside I saw the most wonderful sunrise, and managed to grad a few photographs before I had to dash off.

'Red sky in the morning shepherd's warning' may be true, but the colours of that sunrise were truly inspirational. So, out come the fibres and the photographs as I tried to put together a gradient worthy of that sunrise.

This gradient is based on the Peacock Feathers Gradient Batt set, but the colour transitions start at gold.

You will receive a total of 150g, of blended 21 micron soft merino fibres, in 10 separate merino batts. These batts will allow you to produce a next to the skin soft yarn. I find it easier to produce gradient yarns using batts because I can easily separate each coloured batt into sections to make the number of plies required.

My inspiration for this colourway came from the volcanic pool called the Morning Glory pool in Yellowstone National Park. It was given this name in the 1880's as it had the deep blue colour of the Morning Glory flower. Since then thousands of visitors have thrown pennies for luck into the pool. It is thought that these items may have reduced the flow of hot volcanic water to the pool. This has caused the temperature of the water to go down.

I was given a photograph of a beautiful deep blue / purple orchid and asked if I could make a gradient from the colours. This is the gradient that resulted.

The gradient gently moves from a dusky dark blue, through cornflower to shades of violet. In the final violet merino batt, I added random streaks of golden tussah silk to indicate the stamens of the orchid. These can be incorporated or left out, as you prefer.

You will receive 10 hand blended batts of soft, 21 micron merino, which add up to just over 150g.

I fell in love with the colours in the photograph of the flamingos. Such brightly coloured birds backed by a vivid sunset palette. So I decided to try to translate these colours into a fibre gradient. Easier said than done.

I have eventually produced a gradient made from 10 mini batts of beautifully soft merino fibres. The colours move from a blue violet shade, through pinky lilacs and golden hues to a soft gentle pink.
